The Elite 4%….

This week, Dane Sanders sent me his intro to review from his new Fast Track Photographer program and it was incredible! If you are a photographer who follows my blog, I recommend that you get plugged into his system too. There were so many thought-provoking questions and commentary that I found myself writing notes and my own comments around his intro but the one that stuck with me the most is this one. After doing a lot of research on small businesses, he said, "In a decade, only 4% of all small businesses are still standing." UNREAL!! Can you imagine starting a small business knowing that you have a 96% chance of failing in the first 10 years?! I would guess that fact alone would intimidate a lot of people from even starting their own business! There's so much you have to think about as a business owner….sales, marketing, vendor relations, taxes, insurance, employees, equipment, education, displays, trade shows, etc, etc, etc. and I've found that in the world of photography, if you don't have the business know-how and you don't keep up with the newest technology, trends, etc. you'll become just another starving artist, or you'll be in that 96% group that don't make it.

My husband and I were talking about this very topic last night and considering the fact that this is our 14th year in business, we are excited to know that we've made it well past that statistic. 😀 He wrote about this on his blog last night too and I couldn't have said it better myself…if you're not visualizing your goals and writing them down on paper and on purpose, then what are you doing to better yourself and your business each year? What's your motivation for being self employed and where do you see YOUR business in 10 years?
