Contests & Fun Stuff

Last week, we were featured in the International Special Events Society (ISES) Indiana chapter’s newsletter! Here is a recap of the interview in case you missed it! 😉

What is your title and position at your current company? Owner of Erin Hession Photography in Carmel, Indiana.

What does your company do? How is it different than others like it? We specialize in fun, artistic wedding photography and we truly go above and beyond for every client. For example, we provide vendor recommendations and custom photo schedules to our clients, we bring an emergency kit with us on the day of the event in case of any mishaps, we provide cold bottled waters for our bride & groom during their photo sessions and we even print a folio of images at the reception, which they can take with them on their honeymoon!

How many years have you been in the industry? 17 years

What was your very first job? My passion has always been photography; I actually photographed my first wedding at the age of 14! I built my portfolio and website while studying photography, art & marketing throughout high school and college. By the time I graduated college, I had built a successful full-time photography company!

What lead you in into the event industry? I love photographing people in love, so weddings were a natural choice!

Why did you decide to join ISES? I enjoy networking with other event professionals and following the trends in our industry.

What is your most memorable event? Why? Earlier this year, I had the opportunity to photograph a 5K event for one of our past clients who is suffering from cystic fibrosis. Despite her illness, double pneumonia and 50% lung capacity that day, she crossed the finish line with her walker and dropped to her knees thanking God for the chance to be an athlete for a day. I felt so honored to be there to capture all of those emotions for her and it was one of those moments that make you remember how important our jobs are as photographers. She and her family will have those photos from one of her greatest accomplishments forever.

What’s one thing most people don’t know about you? My husband and I actually went to daycare together! We reconnected in high school and got married after college. We’ve been happily married for over 8 years now and he’s amazing husband, web developer and photographer.

If you were not in the event industry, what would be your dream job? I can’t imagine not being in the event industry, I feel like I’m lucky to have found my dream job already!

This past week was a really fun week of changing up our office space a bit! If you come to visit us, you’ll now be greeted by this pink & green buffet of yummy goodies!! Since candy buffets are the fun and trendy thing to do at weddings now, I thought, why not put one in our office?! 🙂 I think they are so fun and whenever we have a wedding with a candy buffet, we end up using the candies in various ring shots! (Which make amazing canvases as you can see!) 😉

Jamee Bryant from Setting The Mood was the genius behind this entire display!!! She did the whole thing, she’s AMAZING!!! The color scheme, symmetry, various jar heights, linens, candies, decor, bags, etc. were all PERFECT!! If you’re thinking of having a candy buffet at your wedding or next event, you MUST talk to Jamee, she is the BEST!  Click HERE to visit her website!!

Jamee found these cute cookies that matched the buffet!

The buffet includes lollipops, taffy, gumballs, malt balls, rock candy, cookies, mints & custom fortune cookies!

Lollipops!

Gumballs!

Chocolate covered malt balls…AMAZING!

We love working with Jamee, her designs and event decor is always over the top AMAZING! 🙂

Thought I’d do a shot of my engagement & wedding ring in the rock candy while I was at it! 🙂 It’s hard to believe that John & I will be married 8 years on 5/17 this week!!! 🙂

Jamee, thank you so much for your help with this project! You are FABULOUS!! 🙂

On 4/2, we went up to Valparaiso for our friend Kelly’s 5K walk for cystic fibrosis. Kelly is an AMAZING woman and she has defied so many odds in her life. To read more about her, click HERE! 🙂 She is truly the most determined person I know…she decided that she wanted to create a charitable organization called Care CF (website coming soon) where she could assist other CF patients by providing care packages to them during their extended hospital stays. She raised pledges for each mile that she walked and I know for a fact that she raised hundreds of dollars and received LOTS of care package donations! My blog readers alone donated $250 and 3-4 huge boxes FULL of stuff for her care packages!! (THANK YOU ALL!!) 🙂

Kelly made this poster with photos of other friends of hers with CF. She wanted to put a face to the disease and she also wanted her friends to “cross the finish line” with her. She’s so awesome!

Excited for the race to begin!!

And she’s off!!

Heading toward the finish line…determined as ever!!

Such a happy, emotional moment for everyone! 🙂

Hugging another friend of hers who is battling CF….

Kelly had her own cheering section, it was AWESOME! Definitely one of the most memorable shoots of my life!

Her husband Scott is her rock. You can tell how much they truly adore one another. I’m so glad I had the opportunity to photograph their wedding almost 5 years ago! 🙂

Love you guys!!!

We spent 8 wonderful days in Vegas in February for the annual Wedding & Portrait Photographers International Convention at MGM Grand! We flew Southwest (HIGHLY recommended!) and spent the first 2 days of the convention in Kay Eskridge’s “Business of Boudoir” class. (Kay Eskridge is shown above) 🙂 It was a lot of fun! Half of each day we discussed business, marketing, tips & tricks in the world of boudoir, then the other half of the day, we spent photographing models with Hollywood lights, strobe lighting, available light, etc.

WPPI always does a great job at bringing in the best of the best and providing a huge variety of classes and topics for photographers. We had the chance to hear Becker speak, as well as Jasmine Star, JP Elario and Susan Stripling! Speaking of the best of the best…I was also able to get into a Master Class taught by Kit Rogers, the famous make-up artist who has done work for Oprah, Julia Childs, Joan Rivers and the Today Show. He was AMAZING! He talked about how make-up relates to photography and how to effectively touch up a bride/client when on a shoot. His class was worth the cost of the trip alone. I think it’s really important to stay up on things and to continually learn how to perfect your craft, even if that means learning some things that aren’t directly “camera related” like make-up artistry. We’re not always lucky enough to have a professional make-up artist like Karen Hall at every wedding so it’s good to be prepared. 🙂

Kit gave us all kinds of tips and tricks that we plan on using at weddings and shoots now! For example, did you know that blue based red lip pencils can make your teeth appear whiter in photos?! He said to look for a smoky mauve lip pencil, so you can bet we’ll be adding that to our bag of tricks this year! He also suggested telling brides to do facials and hair coloring/conditioning treatments a week before their big day just in case of any problems. 😉 (FYI for all of my brides)

Jasmine Star was great too, she is a photographer & motivational speaker and she talked about running a business more effectively by outsourcing some things and creating the life you want to live. Loved her! In between all of these classes, we had a little bit of down time which was good. It gave us the chance to relax, go shopping, see Vegas and talk about the things we had just learned at all of our classes. One night, we went “out on the town” and went over to the Luxor to see the Titanic exhibit. If you’ve never seen it, I would highly recommend checking it out. Sadly, they wouldn’t allow anyone to take pictures of the exhibit but I can tell you there were all kinds of neat artifacts, including a huge section of the actual ship that they pulled up out of the water. It was incredible to be standing a few feet away from the ship! We also went to the Forum Shops at Caesar’s which was a lot of fun and then over to the Eiffel Tower at the Paris hotel. We took the elevator up to the observation deck that night and it was awesome! Check out the view!

We also spent 2 days on the trade show floor which was AWESOME! We got to see all of the new products, vendors, ideas & websites that recently launched. You should see the huge bag of stuff I came home with! I was afraid my suitcase would be over the 50 pound limit! LOL! We also spent an evening at the Bellagio and watched the fountains, went shopping, had dinner and took pictures of their lobby displays…

They have an Asian themed display at the Bellagio right now, it was pretty cool…

And of course, it wouldn’t be a trip to Vegas without checking out all of the cool wedding cakes and custom chocolate displays at Jean-Philippe!

We had such a great time and can’t wait to go back again next year! 🙂
